Yesterday one of my friends told me that he and his girlfriend are now in an open relationship. Before that they were pretty serious about each other, but time and distance have a habit of breaking up couples, and most people don't survive these tests.
Anyways, it got me thinking. Here in Russia we don't have that yet. I mean, here it doesn't work the same way as in most European countries or the USA. I'm sure people in Moscow and St. Petersburg have heard about it, but for us it's something barbaric - something which is not in our character... but I guess that's true about anything that implies freedom.
As I understand it, an "open relationship" is where both partners agree on seeing other people. Now that's weird... Why should they want to see other people to begin with? If I look at it from this point then it's just an another excuse for breaking up. Maybe just a less painful way, where they leave some hope - some last resort - if nothing works out with anybody else; then they'll be back together again. Or at some party when they suddenly feel very attracted to each other after a couple of shots of vodka...
Then there might be another interpretation... again, from my point of view - Alex, maybe we should rename this blog to "My point of view" :) - it's when two people are seeing each other just for one purpose - sex. You don't owe him anything, he doesn't owe you anything. That kind of relationship is something like "free prostitution" :) Which reminds me about another thing I discussed with my friend yesterday: legalizing prostitution. I had to lead a group discussion class on the topic, and everybody in my group agreed that it should be legalized. But as I found out yesterday, Americans have their own view on the problem, though they could hardly explain why. Maybe because it was Thursday night? ;)
